A Home That Works: Grounded in Comfort and Digging Deep into Northern Energy’s new HQ
We recently had the pleasure of designing Northern Energy’s new HQ, a project with a simple yet powerful vision: create a space that feels like home. Not just somewhere people come to work, but a place where they genuinely want to be. From the outset, we immersed ourselves in understanding Northern Energy’s culture, values, and the way their people work day to day. That insight became the foundation of the design. Warm finishes, purposeful lighting, and relaxed, residential-style furniture bring comfort, while layouts are carefully considered to balance collaboration, focus, and flexibility.
The interiors take inspiration from the earth’s natural layers, a concept that influenced the materials, colours, and overall atmosphere of the space. Raw textures, deep greens, rust tones, and earthen browns run throughout the palette, creating a direct connection to the energy beneath our feet.
Northern Energy’s brand colours of navy and yellow are still present, but softened and paired with clay, stone, and sand tones to create a calm, grounded environment. Tactile textures and natural references enrich the scheme, while panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside bring the outdoors in, providing a constant connection to nature.
Wellbeing, accessibility, and inclusivity are always at the heart of our design approach, and this HQ was no exception. Adjustable lighting helps reduce glare and sensory overload, tactile fabrics add warmth and comfort, and quiet zones provide space for focus or restoration. The layout is intuitive and easy to navigate, ensuring every team member feels supported, comfortable, and able to thrive.
A workplace needs to adapt as seamlessly as its people do, and flexibility was a key part of the brief. On the ground floor, the teapoint and breakout area can quickly transform into what the team affectionately call “night mode”… a relaxed social hub for after-hours gatherings.
Upstairs, the open-plan workspace brings different departments together while maintaining comfort. Acoustic pods and ceiling panels soften sound and provide visual breaks, ensuring the space works well for both collaborative and quieter activities without losing its sense of openness.
Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the project. We sourced much of the furniture locally, working with British manufacturers to reduce environmental impact while supporting home-grown craftsmanship. Tiles with recycled content were chosen for their durability and design appeal, and every material selection was made with a focus on responsibility as well as style.
Northern Energy’s new HQ is more than just a workplace. It’s a reflection of who they are as a business and as a team. It balances professionalism with warmth, and performance with comfort. Most importantly, it provides a place where people feel at home, inspired, and supported.
We’re proud to have played a part in shaping this new chapter for Northern Energy, creating a space that not only works beautifully today but will continue to evolve with them into the future.
“Studio 93 have been fantastic, and designed a space for Northern Energy to love and grow into. They listened, understood and help form the new future for NE HQ! ”
